Children and teenagers spend a lot of their time indoors and on screens, whether at school, doing homework, scrolling apps, messaging friends, or playing video games. Studies show that outdoor exposure and play not only benefits in the physical health of our youth, but it also positively impacts them mentally, with soft skills, and more.
Below, we highlight six great results from exposing kids to the outdoors through a partnership with our friends at Nantahala Outdoor Center on the Chattahoochee River.
1. Promoting Physical Activity
Outdoor experiences expose kids to physical activities such as paddling, biking, hiking, swimming, and more, which can help children stay active and healthy during the summer months when it's all too easy to lounge around the house in the air conditioning.
2. Encouraging Socialization
The more use of technical devices, the less we are face to face. Camps offer a chance for children to meet and interact with other youth from different backgrounds and develop social skills with peers, coaches, and guides.
3. Developing Independence
Being away from home in a structured and safe environment can help children develop independence, decision-making skills, and self-confidence on and off the river. Youth can step up as leaders or build teamwork paddling a raft in unison. Communication, empowerment, and leadership are some other soft skills observed in campers.
4. Experiencing New Challenges
Camps offer unique opportunities for kids to try new activities, learn new skills, and experience challenges that may not be available in their daily lives. Learning a new paddling or biking skill, river reading, identifying wildlife, and more are some areas on which kids will focus at NOC camps.
5. Unplugging From Technology
While sometimes we can’t completely eliminate screens, as they are embedded into everyday life, we can counteract them with quality time outside. NOC provides an opportunity for children to disconnect from technology and spend time in nature, which can help reduce stress and promote overall well-being in young adults.
6. Creating Lifelong Memories
Outdoor summer camps are a channel in which lifelong memories and friendships are made among fellow peers.
This summer, give your child a unique, fun and educational experience to spend their summer months while promoting physical activity, socialization, independence, and personal growth. Nantahala Outdoor Center provides a variety of multi-day summer camps, from kids to teens, on the Chattahoochee River and other area lakes and rivers. Undoubtedly, your children will have the opportunity to experience different river crafts, learn paddling and biking skills, and have fun adventuring outside in nature.
