Pat Rains and Brian Borngesser are certainly no strangers to Roswell, as the duo's put a remarkable stamp on the community with the businesses they've developed and the support they've given.
Their latest venture, The Artillery Room, buids upon the success of Gate City Brewing Co. but lives with a spirit of its own, in that the focus is on their recent addition of vodka, gin and bourbon.
Anchored in the heart of Historic Roswell, the Brewery, Taproom, Backhouse, and Artillery Room at Gate City are situated at the corner of Canton and Magnolia Streets. What used to be two Roswell mechanic shops is now a 30bbl brewhouse with up to twenty house-brewed beers and cocktails on draft. The Artillery Room is part of the Gate City Compound with an entrance on Canton Street, as well as a terraced entrance that connects it to the Taproom at Gate City.
Perhaps the most interesting part about this expansion is the historical relevance of the building. Owner Pat Rains said about the history, "The Artillery Room at Gate City pays respect to the history of the building and to those who came before us. 932 Canton Street was initially part of the Ford Dealership compound. Then in the ‘70s, Ed Mertimer opened the space as Ed’s Gun & Tackle, which operated until the great fire of 1984. One of the worst in Roswell history, the fire posed a unique threat to first responders due to the ammunition inside at the time — a Roswell fireman took a bullet during the incident and thankfully survived.”
The Artillery Room pays tribute to the history of the space both in name and in structure. During renovations, the history behind the walls was discovered. The original exposed brick and design elements are where local history, art, and spirits merge to create a rustic, inviting, and down-to-earth space that focuses on community and craft cocktails. In short, this historic landmark embodies the spirit of the city and will be leaving a local legacy for all patrons to enjoy.
